The Complete Guide to Paint Correction for Houston-Area Vehicles
Paint correction uses machine polishing to remove swirl marks, water spots, and oxidation from clear coat. For Houston-area vehicles exposed to hard water, pollen, and UV damage, it makes a visible difference. Here's everything you need to know.

Paint correction is one of the most misunderstood services in automotive detailing. Customers either don't know it exists, and assume their car's dull paint is just age, or they've been told it's too expensive or unnecessary. The reality: for most Houston-area vehicles more than 2 years old, some level of paint correction would make a visible, significant difference.
Here's everything you need to know.
What Paint Correction Actually Is
Paint correction uses machine polishing, a dual-action or rotary polisher combined with cutting and finishing compounds, to abrade a very thin layer of clear coat, removing or reducing surface defects. The goal is to level the clear coat so light reflects uniformly, which is what creates the deep, glossy look on a properly corrected paint surface.
It does not add anything to your paint. It removes, specifically the damaged surface layer that's scattering light and making your paint look dull.

During your appointment, we'll identify which defects are correctable and be upfront about anything that isn't.
Single-Stage vs. Two-Stage Correction
Single-stage correction uses one compound pass followed by a finishing polish. It's appropriate for lightly to moderately swirled paint and removes 70-85% of visible defects. Starting at $279.
Two-stage correction uses an aggressive cutting pass followed by a medium and finishing pass. For heavier oxidation, more severe swirls, or paint that's been poorly polished before. Removes 85-95% of visible defects. Starting at $479.
The degree of correction is limited by the amount of clear coat remaining. Clear coat is typically 2-4 mils. A good professional will use paint depth gauges to assess your clear coat before committing to an aggressive correction. We do this on every job.
Why You Should Correct Before Ceramic Coating
If you're planning a ceramic coating, paint correction beforehand is almost always worth doing. Here's why: ceramic coating is transparent and hard. Whatever surface defects are present before the coating goes on, swirls, water spots, etch marks, will be locked under the ceramic for the life of the coating (2-5+ years). Correction first means sealing in a perfect surface.
We frequently book correction and ceramic as a combined appointment. The correction is done in the morning, the surface gets a final wipe-down, and the ceramic goes on the same afternoon.
Houston-Specific Paint Correction Considerations
In the Houston area, the most common causes of paint damage are automatic car washes (Katy area, in particular, has a lot of brush-style washes), HOA sprinkler hard water deposits, and the oak and cedar pollen that bonds and etches during pollen season. If any of these apply to your vehicle, and they apply to most vehicles in Fort Bend County, you likely have correctable damage that's worth addressing.

Almost always yes. Ceramic coating is transparent, so surface defects present before application get locked in for the life of the coating. Correcting first ensures you seal in a flawless surface.
Yes. Most automatic car wash scratches are fine swirl marks in the clear coat that single-stage correction removes. Deep marks from brush-style washes may require two-stage correction.
